Qantas has scrapped all scheduled flights between Australia and Hong Kong on Friday as a massive typhoon bears down on the Asian business hub.

Lethal Typhoon Haima has already cut a deadly swathe across the Philippines, killing eight people and is headed straight for Hong Kong as residents there scramble to prepare for the wild storm system.

Qantas said it had cancelled all flights to Hong Kong from Australia in light of the situation.

"We are continuing to monitor the situation and options are available to Qantas customers holding a valid ticket issued on/before 20 October 2016 who are affected by Typhoon Haima for travel between Australia and Hong Kong on/after 21 October 2016 and on/before 22 October 2016," the airline said on its website.

Haima is heading for Hong Kong as the Philippines mop up from the damage to infrastructure and agriculture caused by the deadly typhoon.

It was the second typhoon to hit Philippines in less than a week, battering the typhoon-prone nation with super heavy rain and wild winds.

Wind gusts at the peak of the typhoon were similar to those of the nightmarish Haiyan in 2013, which killed more than 7,350 people in the Philippines.

Hong Kong's 7 million residents are gearing up for the onslaught of Haima which is already bringing in wild weather and monsoon downpours.

Qantas is urging impacted passengers to check its website for more information and updates.
