Cox Plate winning mare Winx will not return to the race track again this Spring after a record-breaking victory on the weekend. It was the most dominant Cox Plate win in history, which you can read all about here.
Trainer Chris Waller confirmed Winx has "pulled up well" from the race with the exception of a minor abrasion on her hind leg.
"Simple bathing and a trip or two to the beach would see it naturally heal; however I have taken the aggressive approach of treating it with antibiotics to ensure no risks are taken," Waller said in a statement on Monday afternoon.
Waller said he and the owners have made a joint decision to end the mare's Spring racing season to ensure Winx spends enough time resting.
"Longevity is the key for this mare as it will provide many more special moments over the next 12 months and beyond," Waller said.
The trainer said he and the owners considered running the champion mare in the $2 million Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington in November and they are still discussing when Winx will return in Autumn.
"Options such as travelling overseas and returning for a third Cox Plate in 2017 are also items the owners and I will discuss in the near future."
For the moment, they can continue to revel in the victory.Suggest a correction
