She may be a multi-award winning singer, but Lorde has penned a note to her fans revealing she feels just like the rest of us when it comes to coming of age.
Lorde has just turned 20. It's that funny age where you're no longer a teenager, but only just an adult. And all the older adults think 'god, you're still a baby' but really, you're twenty, and everything feels a little bit different. The world is, and so are you.
"It's all I've been able to think about for days. I walk around the city, up by the park and by the health food store and down into the subway, this new age hanging in front of my eyes like two of those Mylar balloons that never come down. Can people see it, I wonder, that I'm about to cross over?" Lorde wrote.
I maxed out every single emotion I have in the best possible way, the colours still aching behind my eyes like this weird blissful hangover... For the first time I felt this intimate, empire-sized inner power.Lorde
But people can't see it yet, because what has changed is your perspective, evolving thanks to lived experiences and an emotional roller coaster you've ridden since you were 19, or 18, or 17. Or in Lorde's case, 16.
"I was 16 when most of us met," the singer wrote to her fans.
"Can you believe it? I laugh thinking about that me now -- that glossy idiot god, princess of her childhood streets, handmade and ugly and sure of herself."
Since then, she's had her heart broken and moved out of home to a new city. She's made new friends and created a life which she can call her own because, well, she made it.
"I started to discover in a profound, scary, blood-aching way who I was when I was alone, what I did when I did things only for myself. I was reckless and graceless and terrifying and tender," Lorde wrote.
"I maxed out every single emotion I have in the best possible way, the colours still aching behind my eyes like this weird blissful hangover... For the first time I felt this intimate, empire-sized inner power."
And when this inner power and a blissful hangover called changed perspective combine, that's when people notice the "crossover". Because your priorities change.
Lorde stepped away from the spotlight and turned to her friends and family a little more this year. And as she admits, this happened before she was 20. That might just be the best thing about it. You never know when the crossover is going to hit.
And surely, that makes the ride all the more exhilarating.
