These Over-55s Are Owning The Internet

Age ain't nothing but a number!

Whether you're on board with it or not, the time is very much upon us. The elderly are taking over the internet one crazy post, failed status or new business venture at a time -- and they're liking it.

Like you, we've had one too many Facebook encounters with our grandma that have left us slightly stunned, eternally shamed or in a laughing heap.

But if you think that old people don't 'get it', research is telling us to think again.

According to a new study commissioned by NBN that surveyed 1,002 Australians aged 18-34 and 55 and over, 93 percent of grandparents are jumping online every day. And 72 percent reportedly cannot live without it ...

From using technology to connect with family and friends (79 percent) to trying their hand at online shopping (59 percent) and video streaming (say what now?), more than half of our over-55s believe they are just as tech-savvy as their younger counterparts.

And, in some cases, we tend to agree. Not only do some (not all) understand the internet more than millennials do, they are owning it in ways that are stopping us young ones in our tracks.

Here are The Huffington Post Australia's top picks of over-55s that will make your life eternally better.

1. Baddie Winkle

She is an 88-year-old twerking aficionado and an internet sensation who has been "stealing your man since 1928".

If you haven't heard of her, we'd recommend you start following her stat.

Baddie, who hails from Kentucky, joined Instagram and Facebook in 2014. She is a badass mum, grandma and brand ambassador with a mere 2.4 million followers behind her. Working with brands such as LA brand Dimepiece, she is, time after time, proving to the world that you're "never too old to be the baddest bish in the room".

2. Nonna Paola

She is Australia's favourite Italian grandmother from Melbourne's west. With a strong hatred of tattoos and Trump, and a love of trying new things, she tells it like it is.

And the internet (aka her 274,000 followers) loves it.

3. Grandma Betty

This one's a heart-warmer with a sad ending. The legend of Grandma Betty from Indiana began in 2014, when her 18-year-old grandson decided to document her final years following a lung cancer diagnosis.

Two years following her death, Grandma Betty's cancer battle continues to inspire the internet and her 437,000 loyal Instagram followers.
