Triple J is losing its popular breakfast duo in December.

Radio fans are facing a future without long-serving triple j breakfast hosts Matt Okine and Alex Dyson who are calling time on their popular show.

The ABC announced on Monday that the much-loved pair would be stepping down at the end of the year, with their final show set to go to air on December 16.

"At the end of this year Matt and I are going to be finishing up on the breakfast show on triple j," Dyson revealed to listeners.

"We won't be joining you every single morning in 2017 as we have been for the last three years which is definitely sad news for us," Okine added.

According to the ABC, Dyson is trading radio for travel while Okine plans to commit more time to his music project, Boilermakers.

The youth-oriented station's content director Ollie Wards was sad that the "iconic" presenters were calling it a day.

"As soon as I wake up I hit the triple j app to hear what Matt and Alex are talking about. Not because I have to, I'm genuinely a massive fan," he said.

"From ludicrous talkback like 'what've you eaten for stuff?', WTF moments to learning about Space -- triple j breakfast has been an awesome ride with Matt and Alex. I can't wait to see what they do next."

Since they took the breakfast reins the duo has helmed the popular Like A Version segment and covered thousands of kilometres broadcasting from the road. They were also known for their many funny videos.

An announcement about who will replace the duo has not yet been made.
