Disgraced former AFL star Ben Cousins has reportedly been arrested and is under police guard in hospital after crashing his car in Perth.

Police would not be drawn on any incident involving the former West Coast and Richmond player when contacted by The Huffington Post, but media reports suggest Cousins' vehicle smashed into a truck in the suburb of High Wycombe early Wednesday morning.

The former footballer is currently in hospital following the crash and is being guarded by police, according to the Nine Network. The 38-year-old's injuries are said to be minor.

If accurate, the incident is the latest in a series of run-ins Cousins has had with the law over the past decade amid struggles with drug addiction. The most recent was in October when he was charged with breaching a violence restraining order and drug possession.

On Tuesday, Cousins reportedly failed to turn up to court to face on the charges of breaching a violence restraining order and possessing methamphetamine.

The former Brownlow Medalist's personal woes stretch back at least to the mid 2000s. He was suspended by West Coast in 2007 and went to an expensive American rehab clinic, but later that year was nabbed for drug possession and banned from the AFL for a year.

Then in early 2015 he was caught inside Perth's SAS Regiment and subsequently underwent mental assessment in hospital. Earlier this year he was again hospitalised after directing traffic in a bizarre incident on a Perth bridge.
