Gigi Hadid kicked off the American Music Awards with a brutal, spot-on impression of Melania Trump that some people weren’t too happy about. With co-host Jay Pharaoh standing beside her as Donald Trump, Hadid mocked the Republican National Convention speech in which Melania plagiarized first lady Michelle Obama.

The 21-year-old model addressed the somewhat controversial takedown in a handwritten note to her followers on Monday.

“I was honored to host the AMA’s last night and to work with some of the most respected writers in the business,” Hadid said in the note, which was posted to Twitter. “I removed or changed anything in the script that I felt took the joke too far, and whether or not you choose to see it, what remained was done in good humor and with no bad intent.”

The model finished her note by adding: “I too have been the center of a nationally televised comedy skit that poked fun at my actions, and was able to find the humor in it. I believe Melania understands show business and the way shows are written and run. I apologize to anyone that I offended & have only the best wishes for our country.”

It’s unclear why Hadid felt the need to apologize for her opening act.

Pharaoh also addressed the controversy in a Facebook post on Monday. The former “Saturday Night Live” star compared the horrific names slung at Obama during her time in the spotlight to Melania’s milder treatment.

“Over the last 8 years the beautiful Michelle Obama has been the victim of excessive slurring!” Pharaoh wrote. “The Beautiful Flotus has been called Ape, Gorilla, Monkey, Manish, Ugly, Disgusting,”Not fit to be in the whitehouse”, always physically attacked by the general populous, nobody really snaps about it!”
