After nearly three months away from the spotlight, Selena Gomez returned last week to accept the award for Favorite Female Artist in the pop/rock genre at the American Music Awards. She took to the stage to deliver a powerfully honest speech on the pressures of fame, telling the audience, “I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside.”

Now, Gomez has returned to social media, posting an emotional message on her Instagram page on Thanksgiving. The 24-year-old, who reportedly checked into a rehab facility for mental health issues during her break, shared a photo of her fans and thanked them for their support during “the hardest yet most rewarding” year of her life.

She wrote:

I have a lot to be thankful for this year.. My year has been the hardest yet most rewarding one yet. I’ve finally fought the fight of not ‘being enough’. I have only wanted to reflect the love you guys have given me for years and show how important it is to take care of YOU. By grace through faith. Kindness always wins. I love you guys. God bless

In August, Gomez canceled the remainder of her Revival tour to focus on her health. She has battled lupus ― an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own tissue and organs, according to the Mayo Clinic ― for over a year, and thought it was time for a much-needed hiatus.

“As many of you know, around a year ago I revealed that I have lupus, an illness that can affect people in different ways. I’ve discovered that anxiety, panic attacks and depression can be side effects of lupus, which can present their own challenges,” Gomez told People at the time. “I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off.

“Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
