Seven people are reportedly dead and one other is missing after a boating accident in New Zealand.

The charter boat, known as Francie, was carrying 11 people is said to have run into trouble near Auckland on Saturday afternoon, with rescuers managing to pull a number of survivors from the water.

Officials say rescue teams will reportedly resume the search for the missing today.

Police said the bodies of two men were recovered overnight and authorities are still investigating what happened to the vessel, the ABC reports.

Conditions in the area on Saturday have been reported as poor, with large sea swells.

The NZ Herald reports that the skipper and some fishermen on board weren't wearing life preservers.

Television New Zealand said the incident occurred at the entrance to Auckland harbour, an area which is well known for producing treacherous conditions for vessels/.

It's reported that strong winds were making for choppy conditions in the search on Sunday morning.
