A dog in an animal shelter waiting to be rescued saw her former owners come in and rescue another dog, in what might be the most heartbreaking animal story of 2016.

Zuzu, the two-year-old German Shepherd, was sent to a Los Angeles-based shelter after she escaped from her home into next door's yard -- resulting in the neighbour calling animal control. Her owners then decided to leave her there.

"Doing dog intros we got interrupted by a distracted and overly excited Zuzu. With her fast wagging tail seeing her owners Zuzu lite up like a Christmas tree. She looked like the happiest dog. Yeah, she's going home," Desi Lara, a volunteer at the Downey Animal Care Center, wrote on Facebook.

"But no. Talking to her owners they told me they were not here to reclaim her, they were getting another dog," she added tragically.

Lara said the owners thought Zuzu wasn't a happy dog anymore following the death of her father, so they left her behind and decided to buy a new one.

On a more positive note, Lara announced that they renamed the dog Zuzu after the daughter in the movie 'It's a Wonderful Life'.

"Why, because we are going to post, tag and share her and give her a New life. A wonderful life!" Lara said.

Zuzu is still up for adoption. Let's hope she gets the home she deserves really, really soon.
