The first trailer for 'Big Little Lies', a new HBO series based on the Sydney author's Liane Moriarty's best-selling novel, has landed on the internet.

The big budget seven-part series, starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, sees the novel's fictionalised setting on Sydney's northern beaches transposed to the glitzy beaches of California.

The series is being produced by HBO, the same network behind worldwide hits like 'Sex and the City' and 'Game of Thrones'.

Judging from the trailer, 'Big Little Lies' looks to be full of betrayals, powerplays and fueds played out among a group of monied, and pretty unlikable, California elites. There also looks to be a fair dose of sex, crime and action.

According to Fairfax Media, Moriarty is a fan of the project and the author met Kidman early on to discuss the adaptation.

"I met Nicole when she was in Sydney briefly to talk about the book," Moriarty told Fairfax back in 2014.

"She was absolutely lovely and I loved everything she said about their plans for the book. I'm really thrilled at the idea of them both starring in it."
