Police have arrested 40 people for drug possession over the weekend at the Subsonic Music Festival near Barrington Tops, New South Wales. 20 people were charged on Saturday, with 20 more on Sunday as police continued drug operations within the grounds.

"Police are disappointed that attendees of the Subsonic Music Festival continue to ignore drug warnings," NSW police said.

People were found with various illicit drugs including amphetamines, LSD, Ketamine, cannabis and ecstasy. Two cannabis cautions were issued.

"Police continue to urge attendees to enjoy safely, without the possession or consumption of illicit drugs, which can result in charges, fines, and serious health ramifications," NSW police said.

Superintendent Chris Craner, Commander of Port Stephens Local Area Command, said police were "shocked" by the number of people consuming illicit drugs.

"Police are disappointed and shocked with the number of people carrying drugs and personally putting their own health and the health of others at risk," Superintendent Craner said.

"Consuming a prohibited drug is extremely dangerous – you don't know what is in the drug, how and where it has been manufactured, or what effects it can have on your body.

Three people were charged with supplying a prohibited drug on Saturday. One person was charged after being found in possession of a laser pointer.

Subsonic Music Festival is a three day annual music and art festival held since 2008.
