Aussie cricket legend Shane Warne has surprised 55,000 Coldplay fans by joining the iconic British rock band on stage for an impromptu performance in Melbourne.

Warne, a long-time mate of Coldplay front man Chris Martin, joined the band on stage at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night to perform 'Don't Panic', showing off some pretty serious harmonica skills.

Warne and Martin's friendship reportedly stretches back 15 years and the pair regularly catch up when Martin is down under, including in 2009 when Warne took the rocker to bushfire relief centres following Black Saturday.

According to NewsCorp Australia, Warne and his children spent Saturday afternoon with Martin and the Coldplay band before the gig. It was the last Melbourne performance before Coldplay's A Head Full Of Dreams tour moves to Sydney for shows on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Warnie's surprise performance was not the first unusual happening at Coldplay's Melbourne shows, with one fan proposing to his finacee in stage at the band's Friday night arena gig.

Judging from social media, Warnie's such a big fan of the band he backed up at last night's gig after also checking the band out on Friday night.
