The second series of ‘Planet Earth’ has entranced millions with its depictions of the most resourceful, and mischief-making, of our animal kingdom co-habitees.

Over the last six weeks, viewers have watched, entranced, as the production team have travelled the world, using the latest filming technology to capture the inner lives of some of the world’s most enigmatic inhabitants - from the too cute pygmy sloth family of Episode 1, to the unbearably sweet baby turtles who enjoyed a happy ending during this weekend’s finale.

As well as the stunning sights, the unique appeal of the series has been guaranteed, as ever, by the awestruck but authoritative tones of Sir David Attenborough, now in his seventh decade of broadcasting his enthusiasm for nature.

Now, to mark the series’ sign-off, the BBC has unveiled this behind-the-scenes video, showing Sir David hard at work on his scripts that accompany the images before us.

Composer of the show’s score, Hans Zimmer, also reflects on the appeal of Sir David’s reassuring tones. “That voice that makes it feel like he’s only talking to you, and that he has something very important to tell you,” he says.

Far from undoing the magic of the show, more than one million viewers have enjoyed this sneaky peek of a TV icon at work.

The show itself has been an enormous hit with viewers, and the BBC has hinted that a third series could be on the way.
