Australia, meet Jamie Mitchell, tamer of gigantic aquatic beasts.
The Gold Coast lifeguard, paddleboard endurance race champ and professional big wave surfer absolutely nailed the 10-metre plus conditions at the iconic Portuguese break about 100 kilometres north of the capital Lisbon.
For his daredevilry/madness/awesomeness, he claimed the World Surf League Big Wave Tour Nazare Challenge.
"I have never made a final before today so to win is unreal," he said.
"To put together a whole contest from start to finish is actually more exciting than just the win today. I felt comfortable out there, my board felt amazing and that gave me a bunch of confidence."
Mitchell made his move about halfway through the final, dropping in late on a lefthander and hanging on -- somehow -- before the white water gobbled him up. When he surfaced, he scored 8.67, which was enough to pinch the title from Brazilian Carlos Burle.
Here are extended highlights of the final.
So what did you get up to this week?
