The Castle House Could be Demolished As Council Votes Against Heritage Lisiting

Dreamin'.

A Melbourne council has rejected the idea of applying for heritage protection for the house featured in the cult Australian film 'The Castle' meaning it could face demolition.

The move was a bid to save the iconic Australian house from being demolished in a plot twist eerily close to the film itself.

The beloved Australian film sees Darryl Kerrigan and his family fight against developers to keep their property, taking it all the way to the High Court and now life is imitating art.

The owner Vicky Cosentino wants to knock down the house to build two townhouses, the ABC reports. We know what you're thinking, "tell him he's (she) dreamin".

The Moonee Valley Council voted on Tuesday night against the bid to grant the place national heritage protection, leaving the fate of the Australian institution in dire straits.

Councillors rejected the heritage protection bid for 3 Dagonet Street in Strathmore, with five votes to four but allegedly it can still be saved, SBS news reports.

Major Andrea Surace told AAP she understood the sentimental side to the building but believed that it lay with the movie and not necessarily the house itself.

"An important debate went on, but we have to remember this is a private person's property," Suraco told AAP on Tuesday night.

"And the significant heritage or sentimental side is from the movie -- and the house was supposed to be in Coolaroo -- no one would have known it was in Strathmore."

Surace said that the owner was happy for someone to buy the house and take it elsewhere if they wanted to make it a tourist attraction, the ABC reports.

"It has no property value but I guess it relates to a movie that is of significant value and heritage to the community," Surace said.

"Maybe Film Australia, maybe some other passionate person -- may wish to purchase the property for a nominal fee and have it removed and taken elsewhere," she added.

You can almost hear Kerrigan yelling "it's not a house it's a home, a man's home is his castle" from here.
