A man has died following a single vehicle incident at the Summernats car festival in Canberra on Thursday, ACT police have confirmed. There are reports the man fell off the back of a ute while at the popular car festival.
At approximately 4PM, ACT Police and Ambulance services were called to Exhibition Park after receiving reports of an incident involving a 30-year-old man, police have confirmed in a statement released on Friday afternoon.
The male was taken from the venue to The Canberra Hospital and died on Friday afternoon as a result of injuries sustained at the scene.
"The Summernats team offer their deepest condolences to family and friends of those involved," organisers of the festival said in a Facebook statement.
Summernats is a 'Streetmachine' car festival where more than 1800 cars descend on the nation's capital yearly to a crowd of more than 100,000 car enthusiasts.
The festival originated in 1988 and is " a celebration of the street machine lifestyle and the people who live it," according to the festival's website.
This is the first person to have died on ACT roads in 2017 and ACT Policing's Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A report will also be prepared for the coroner.
