Michael Chamberlain's ex-wife, Lindy, has spoken out after the 72-year-old's sudden death on Monday night.

Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton, who was wrongly convicted when her daughter Azaria was snatched by a dingo in 1980, has spoken out after Michael Chamberlain died from complications connected to acute leukaemia.

"I am on my way today to support and be with our children," Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton said in a statement released by the Harry Miller Group.

"Given Michael's death was unexpected, I would ask that the media please consider that Michael's wife and all of his children are deeply grieving and need some space."

Lindy and Michael wed in 1969 before the couple were wrongly convicted over the death of their baby daughter, Azaria, who was snatched from their tent in Uluru during 1980.

Lindy was charged with murder while Michael was charged with being an accessory until the couple were pardoned and exonerated in 1988. The pair received compensation for the wrongful conviction but later separated, both remarrying.

The couple had a son, Raegan, and daughter, Kahlia, together who were both by Michael's side at Gosford Hospital when he died.

Michael Chamberlain became a writer and academic. Since his death on Monday night, an outpouring of tributes have flown on social media.

New Zealand actor Sam Neill, who played Chamberlain in the film Evil Angels opposite Meryl Streep, called Chamberlain an "impressive man".
