Wicketkeeper Suffers Suspected Jaw Fracture In Bizarre Big Bash Accident

Peter Nevill taken to hospital after being hit by a flying bat.

The Melbourne Renegades won a final over thriller in the Big Bash League to keep their finals tilt alive on Monday night, but the win was overshadowed by a bizarre incident where the team's wicketkeeper Peter Nevill was taken to hospital with a suspected jaw fracture after being hit with a flying bat.

The Renegades posted a total of 9/171 against the Strikers at Adelaide Oval, with the home team struggling to chase down that target. Adelaide captain Brad Hodge took a swing at a ball travelling down the leg side and connected, but his bat slipped out of his hands as he followed through on the stroke. Wicketkeeper Nevill watched the ball fly toward the boundary, and didn't see the bat flying through the air.

It came down, hard, on his face.

Nevill fell to the ground, clutching his face. It emerged later he had been hit in the cheekbone by the handle of the bat. Nevill was helped from the field with clear swelling to his face, and the Big Bash League later updated fans that he had been taken to hospital for scans for a suspected jaw fracture.

As of publication time, the Renegades have not given an update on Nevill's condition, besides a few tweets at the time of his injury and saying it "doesn't look good".
