A man and woman are in hospital after being mauled by dogs and allegedly set alight by another man in Wollongong overnight.

NSW Police say the pair was walking in Myuna Way, Mangerton around 9pm when another man allegedly "set his two dogs" on them as they walked near his unit.

"As the pair attempted to leave the area, they were confronted by the man, who allegedly doused the male victim in a flammable substance and set him alight," police said in a statement.

The woman tried to help the man, suffering serious burns herself in the process.

The 45-year-old man and 44-year-old woman were taken to Wollongong hospital, with serious burns to their upper bodies. The woman is said to be in a stable condition, but the man was later flown to a Sydney hospital in a critical condition.

A 41-year-old man was arrested at a Mangerton apartment around 10.30pm.

"He was taken to Wollongong Police Station where he was charged with throw/lay down etc explosive (etc) with intent to maim/do grievous bodily harm," police said in a statement.

"The man was refused bail to appeal before Wollongong Local Court later today.

"A search warrant is being executed on the man's home."
