Shocking images have emerged of a young surfer riding over a giant great white shark at a popular NSW beach.

Promising surfer Eden Hasson had reportedly been out catching waves at Samurai Beach, on the NSW mid north coast, when the alarming incident unfolded.

The 10-year-old reportedly paddled at the northern end of the beach and took off on a left-hander when a dark shape emerged through the wave.

To the lad's horror the dark mass turned out to be a three-metre great white shark.

"When I took off I thought I saw something and when I went to do the first snap off the top I hit something and I thought it was seaweed," Hasson told the Mail online.

"Then when [Dad] called me in I thought it must be a shark because there was a big school of fish we saw.

"If I had known it was the shark in the wave I would have freaked out and fallen off ... I saw the photo and I was shocked."

The surfer's dad, a local real estate agent, told Fairfax Media he noticed the shark as he was taking photos of his son in the water.

"I took the camera onto the rocks and started taking photos when I noticed a dark shape," Hasson is quoted as saying.

"I was just about to call everyone in when Eden took off on the wave in the picture and I took a number of shots."
