Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull Delivers Australia Day Address

'Deep in our DNA we know that everyone is entitled to a fair go in the great race of life.'

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull wishes you a Happy Australia Day.

In his Australia Day address on Thursday, Turnbull praised the multicultural country for giving everyone a "fair go".

"We come from nearly 200 countries of all faiths, cultures and backgrounds. And yet in a world where conflict and intolerance seem more intractable than ever, we live together in peace," the prime minister said in the video address.

Turnbull acknowledged the rich multiculturalism within the nation, recalling his own family's migrant story.

Our First Australians have lived on this land, cared for it, for over forty thousand years, for time out of mind. Theirs is the oldest continuous human culture on earth and it enriches us all.Malcolm Turnbull

"My family's migrant story has many chapters -- a sailor on the Sirius landing at Sydney Cove, staunch Scots building a chapel on the Hawkesbury, a pair of actors in the cast of Showboat who chose our southern sunshine over the gloom of Depression England," Turnbull said.

"Here under the Southern Cross we have forged our own nation with unique Australian values, democratic and egalitarian. Deep in our DNA we know that everyone is entitled to a fair go in the great race of life."

The Prime Minister paid tribute to Indigenous Australians, as the country acknowledges a day which many Indigenous Australians find difficult to celebrate, seeing it as a day they were invaded.

"Our First Australians have lived on this land, cared for it, for over forty thousand years, for time out of mind. Theirs is the oldest continuous human culture on earth and it enriches us all."
