All escapees from Wednesday's large-scale breakout from Victoria's Malmsbury youth detention centre have been located and arrested.

In a statement released on Thursday, Victoria police said 15 detainees initially fled the centre following a riot but that eight were caught -- six at Lockwood, near Bendigo, and another two in paddock near the youth prison.

Another four fugitives were caught at Ashburton on Thursday morning and the remaining two were arrested in Colac at about 2:45pm.

The remaining pair were located after an allegedly stolen Ford Falcon XR6 was found abandoned in Balnalgowan Avenue in Colac.

In the updated statement on Thursday afternoon, police said all of the escapees have no been located and arrested.

"A 17-year-old Redan male was arrested at a Redan address about midday and is currently in custody," police said in a statement.

"In relation to the final two, there was a pursuit that led into the suburb of Colac before there was a short foot chase after which those final two were arrested," Victorian Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp told media in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

"The Victorian community should have every confidence that Victorian police are well equipped to keep this community safe."

Police believe the escaped inmates had been travelling in two cars that were last seen Melbourne's eastern and western fringe.

One of the vehicles was involved in a crash and then dumped in Mulgrave on Wednesday night.

Police said some of the escaped youths were using a blue Ford Falcon, rego ZKV598.

The riot at the centre, about 100 kilometres north-west of Melbourne, started about 2.45pm on Wednesday after a number of youths assaulted a staff member and gained access to his keys.

The assaulted worker at the centre sustained injuries in the attack and one inmate was also injured in the riot, according to police.

Police said the Operations Response Unit, Public Order Response Team, Dog Squad, Fugitive Taskforce and Critical Incident Response Team were all working to track down the fugitives.
