Stealing anything from someone is a pretty terrible thing to do -- money, a wallet, a bag, a phone. But stealing a living thing? That's rotten. And if that living thing happens to be a very cute little pug puppy called Egg? That's just not on.

NSW Police are appealing for help after a man was robbed at Sydney's Olympic Park on Thursday night. A 29-year-old man was walking his dog along Australia Avenue, when it is alleged three men with knives approached.

The trio demanded the man's wallet and bag, and then ran from the scene with the man's dog.

Egg, the pug, is 14 weeks old. Egg is black, and may be wearing a red coiled collar.

Police are looking for three men described as "being of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance", around 30 years old. Two are said to be of slim build, and the third was larger with a bald head and goatee.

"Police are urging the men to safely return the dog and attend their nearest police station," NSW Police said in a statement.

"Police are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au/"

Many people have commented on the NSW Police Facebook page in dismay.

"What possesses these kind of people to do such horrible things, doesn't matter where you go the world is getting worse, that poor dog will be so scared," one person wrote.

"Hope they have the heart to look after egg properly in the heat lots of water and a cool spot for egg, he wont survive outside in this heat," said another.
