The baby boy died in hospital from unexplained injuries.

Victoria Police have charged a man over the death of an eight-week-old baby in Colac, south-west Melbourne six years ago.

A 27-year-old Irrewarra man was arrested and charged on Monday with murder and two cases of child homicide, according to a statement released by police.

Homicide squad detectives allege the incident occurred on Hearn Street on October 15, 2011 and an unconscious child was taken to hospital where he died on October 23.

It is believed the boy was found in an unresponsive state following the incident and died after suffering from unexplained injuries.

The man appeared at the Geelong Magistrate's Court on Monday afternoon where he was remanded in custody to reappear in court on April 21 for a committal mention, according to the Herald Sun.
