A woman is in a critical condition after being hit by an out-of-control car on Friday morning while walking along a footpath in Chatswood on Sydney's lower north shore.

The Toyota sedan was travelling on Victoria Avenue when it left the road and struck a pram, police have said, before striking the female pedestrian, who is believed to be in her 30s.

The vehicle then crashed into a pole, hit a motorbike and flipped onto its side before coming to rest on the footpath outside a Chinese restaurant, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The woman was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where she is in a critical condition. Police have said that it is not believed that she has any connection to the child in the pram, whose age or sex is yet to be confirmed.

It has however been confirmed that the child was not injured but has been taken to a medical centre by family as a precaution. A witness told The Sydney Morning Herald that he was on Victoria Avenue with his brother when the crash happened.

"All we know is that he [the driver] mounted that curb, lady was walking that way, [the car] collected her, collected the second lady," Oubie Elrish said.

The driver of the car, a 67-year-old male, is expected to undergo mandatory blood and urine testing and was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
