28 Injured After Vehicle Smashes Into Crowd In New Orleans

More than 20 people have been injured.

Twenty-one people were hospitalised with five in a serious condition after a vehicle drove into a crowd in New Orleans.

The Times-Picayune reports that the car plowed into the crowd during a mardi gras parade about 6.45pm Saturday local time.

Police say the driver is being investigated for intoxication and do not suspect terrorism.

"Initial reports show so far about a dozen people are in critical condition," The Times-Picayune quotes police spokeswoman Ambria Washington as saying.

"That number could increase as the investigation is ongoing."

Police later told media that 21 people were taken to seven hospitals.

Witnesses said the vehicle that hit the crowd was a pickup truck driven by a young man.
