"I can't let this break me," thought Daniella Borg after her partner, Kevin, was killed by a one punch attack in 2004.

Borg had just given birth to the couple's ninth child, Hannah, the shock of Kevin's death made her want to hide away.

"I had daughters and family who were very supportive," she told The Huffington Post Australia.

"For a few days I was just in a moment where I didn't know what to do, I didn't know how to react, I just didn't want to do anything basically. I just wanted to stay in my room and my family made me come out."

Being a mum was never part of Daniella Borg's dream, who along with her nine daughters stars in the NITV reality series Family Rules, a show that captures the drama and scrappy interplay of a close family -- son in laws and grandchildren included.

"For whatever reason, things have gotten us to this point," Borg said.

"I think that life is full of up and downs. We're blessed."
