PETA Australia has sent a letter to Australian rock band, Hunters and Collectors, urging them to consider a 'namelift'.

In a letter posted to their website, the group said that they believe that the band's current name openly encourages people to hunt animals.

Ahead of the band's Adelaide reunion show, the animal rights activist group has suggested they adopt a new name such as 'Hunters and Collectors of Antiques', 'Hunters and Collectors of Vinyl Records' and even 'Hunters and Collectors of Beer Cans'.

"We feel sure that it was never your intention to promote the killing of intelligent, sensitive, and defenceless animals, but your name may nevertheless make hunting seem appealing to your fans," the letter read.

Ashley Fruno, PETA's associate director of campaigns said that the changing of the band's name would be a "win-win situation".

"The name would no longer be synonymous with animal suffering, and the move would help persuade people to aim for less violent hobbies."

The request has come as duck-hunting season approaches in Victoria and Tasmania, having already commenced in South Australia.
