One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson was arrested after an altercation with a paparazzo at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday night.

The male photographer was allegedly pushed to the floor and hit his head as Tomlinson and girlfriend, Eleanor Calder, collected their luggage, TMZ first reported. According to a lawyer for Tomlinson, Martin Singer, the paparazzo started it.

“The paparazzi provoked and caused the altercation that occurred with Louis at the airport this morning,” Singer said in a statement provided to The Huffington Post.

A few other people had also been harassing Calder, reportedly prompting her to retaliate. Tomlinson was placed under citizen’s arrest.

The star was charged with misdemeanor battery and is due in court on March 29, according to People.

“This is not the first or last time that a paparazzi has created an altercation with a celebrity,” Singer continued. “While the altercation was going on with the paparazzi, three other individuals were attacking his girlfriend during this incident and he came to her defense.”

One Direction, which also features Harry Styles, Liam Payne and Niall Horan, has been on hiatus for about a year.
