A carjacking has failed in Sydney, with a Wagga Wagga man arrested and charged on Friday.

A would-be thief has got more than he bargained for in a bungled carjacking in Sydney, police say.

The 46-year-old robber allegedly tried to hijack a plumber's ute in Haymarket, in the city's CBD, on Friday afternoon but the victim managed to jump out of the car and lock it, trapping the assailant inside.

During the incident, the carjacker punched the driver to the face several times and demanded to be driven to Wagga Wagga, police allege.

However, police said the driver managed to get out of his vehicle then remotely-locked all the doors, leaving the attacker trapped inside.

Police were later called and after a fight the 39-year-old alleged attempted carjacker was arrested.

He was charged with numerous offences including aggravated assault with intent to take a motor vehicle and resisting police.

The man, from Ashmont near Wagga Wagga, was refused bail and will front Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
