Several people have been hospitalised after a crash involving a bus and a garbage truck during heavy rains in Sydney's west.

Police say the garbage truck and the bus carrying 20 people collided, causing the bus to leave the road and hit a number of parked cars at Wetherill Park, in Sydney's west.

NSW Ambulance paramedics have treated 15 of the passengers at the scene for various injuries including fractures and bruising.

Police say eight people were taken to local hospitals including Liverpool, Westmead and Fairfield.

Authorities are investigating whether the garbage truck ran a red light.

The bus driver was trapped for a short time, before being released.

The driver of the garbage truck was uninjured. He was breath tested at the scene and returned a negative result.
