An elderly man has died after being pulled from the water off Coogee Beach.

The 77-year-old went missing while swimming at the northern end of the beach on Friday night after his sister lost sight of him in the water.

Emergency services searched the area and an ambulance helicopter spotted the man floating off the north headland about 9pm.

The elderly man was winched on board and taken to land but could not be revived.

Police will address media on the incident at 11.30am.

The tragedy comes as NSW continues to be lashed with bad weather, with heavy rain and flash flooding predicted for parts of the state across the weekend.

On Thursday, an 11-year-old boy died after he was caught in floodwaters and swept into a drain near Wollongong.
