Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from Indian Wells ahead of his clash with Roger Federer.

Nick Kyrgios has cited sickness after declaring on Twitter that he's pulling out of his quarter final clash against Roger Federer at Indian Wells.

The polarising Aussie was heading into the BNP Paribas Open clash after sensationally beating second seed Novak Djokovic on Wednesday to set up the fixture against Federer.

Kyrgios, ranked 16th in the world, broke the news of his exit on social media.

"Unfortunately I am unable to play today due to sickness," he wrote on his official Twitter feed.

"At this stage we think it's food poisoning, and I'm praying it's nothing more.

"After a restless night of being sick I have nothing left and to play a great champion like Roger, I need to be at my best to have a chance.

"I don't take this decision lightly, these are the matches we train for but I'm in no fit state to take to the court. I'm sorry to the fans but I have to put my health first and I hope you understand."

The prodigiously talented Kyrgios has been troubled throughout his career by on court meltdowns and inconsistent performances.

At this year's Australian Open he was lashed by tennis great John McEnroe for mentally clocking off in his second round loss to Italian Adreas Seppi.
