Woman Screamed For Help Before She Was Raped By Fellow Tram Passenger

The 49-year-old suspect has been denied bail in court on Friday.

A Victorian woman appealed for help from other commuters on a Melbourne tram on Thursday before being sexually assaulted by a man who was following her.

Victoria Police allege the 49-year-old man started to touch and assault the woman while on a tram on Collins Street in the Melbourne CBD between 5am and 5:25am, according to a statement released on Friday.

Police report the woman then got off the tram at the St Vincents Plaza, where the man followed her before sexually assaulting her.

The accused male was arrested by police around 6pm on Thursday night in relation to the incident and has been charged with offences including rape, sexual assault, attempted rape, assault and false imprisonment.

He was due to appear before the Melbourne Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Victoria Police are also now appealing for information from the public or anyone who may have seen the victim, who was wearing a yellow-gold dress while on the tram. Witnesses are urged to contact Crimestoppers to assist with investigations.
