8 Superfoods That Help Combat Diabetes

Just because you're diabetic doesn't mean you have to deprive yourself of delicious foods. The key is following a balanced diet rich in proteins or fats and lower in carbohydrates.

"There really are no 'best foods' for those with diabetes," Dr. Vladimir Milosevic tells The Huffington Post Canada.

Still, some foods are better than others when it comes to keeping blood glucose in check. In the video above, we discover eight superfoods for diabetics — including dark chocolate, which is rich in insulin dropping flavonoids.

Other foods that can help fight diabetes are fibre-rich berries, steel-cut oats and fish containing high levels of Omega-3 fatty acids.

"There really are no 'best foods' for those with diabetes."

"Foods that contain a higher percentage of protein or fat in relation to carbohydrates will not raise blood glucose levels as much," says Milosevic, who recommends consuming meat, fish and non-starchy vegetables.

The same rules apply for those who travel or eat out often. "Diabetes need to choose foods that have a lower glycemic index, such as non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, carrots or spinach; whole grains like brown rice, barley, or quinoa; and legumes like kidney beans, lentils and black-eyed peas," Milosevic notes.

In the event a diabetic's blood sugar dips while they're out, Milosevic says it is of utmost importance diabetics immediately consume 15g of carbohydrates (about 3/4 cup of juice).

While Type 1 diabetes is irreversible, type 2 diabetes can be prevented and reversed with modifications to diet and weight.
