Gladys Berejiklian's government took a hit at Saturday's NSW by-elections.

NSW Labor has picked up another seat in the lower house after Paralympian Liesl Tesch claimed Gosford in Saturday's by-election, while the Liberal Party believes it has retained seats in Manly and the North Shore.

Labor reportedly called Tesch's win against Liberal candidate Jilly Pilon shortly after the result became clear on Saturday.

"I am honoured to have been elected to represent Gosford in the state parliament," Tesch said in a statement.

Liberal candidates Griffin and Felicity Wilson declared victory in the northern Sydney electorates of Manly and North Shore later on Saturday.

There had been fears the coalition could lose the heartland seats due to community anger of council amalgamations.

While the results were positive for the Liberals, the party suffered a big swing against it in both Manly and North Shore.

NSW Opposition Leader Luke Foley said the state government needed to "change direction" in the wake of the poor results.
