A wet weekend is in store for Victorians, with possible flooding on the way as a strong cold front brings heavy rain.

A strong cold front is currently clearing the far east of the state, while an associated low pressure system over central parts of Bass Strait is forecast to move to the northeast in the evening, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

A flood alert has been issued for several parts of the state.

"Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is possible across eastern and coastal parts of the Southwest district," BoM said on its website.

"Rainfall totals of 20 to 50 mm are forecast for the Greater Melbourne catchments with isolated higher totals of up to 75 mm possible," BoM said.

Flood alerts are in place for Greater Melbourne, the Barwon, Leigh and Moorabool Rivers and Otway Ranges, West and South Gippsland.

There are also flood watches in place for the Barwon, Leigh and Moorabool Rivers and Otway Ranges and West and South Gippsland.

BOM Senior Forecaster Dean Stewart told AAP the worst of the weather would probably hit on Sunday afternoon.

"A band of rain will develop over the Melbourne area and very strong winds as well," he said.

High country -- Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buller -- was treated to some April snow on Sunday.

Chris Hocking from Falls Creek told the ABC it got below zero degrees Celsius just after lunch.

"We saw some snow flakes appear from the sky at about 2:00pm and definitely some wild weather with it, strong winds and no doubt that's been so around the state," he said.
