Posting to his social media on Thursday morning, David Campbell celebrated his third year of sobriety.
In 2015, Campbell publicly mentioned his sobriety on a segment on the "Today Show" where he was on a panel discussing Shane Warne's controversial line of questioning after Australia won their fifth Cricket World Cup. Warne went from player to player asking them their post-match plans, and how hard they'd be drinking, the panel remarked on how drinking culture had been ingrained in Australian society.
"I think it's shameful." Campbell said during the show, "There is a stadium full of young men and women who look up to these guys and it would have been nice if one of those cricketers was accountable enough to say 'nothing will be better than what I just did on this field'."
"I gave up booze a year ago," the 'Mornings' co-host continued, "because I'd had enough and I was ashamed of perpetuating that in front of my own son".
The following day, Campbell penned an opinion piece explaining why it was important to him to defend his sobriety, and his personal journey with addiction.
"Was I an alcoholic? No. Did I have the propensity to become one? Yes. Very much so. There is addiction on both sides of my family and I was standing at the doorway of a very dark room."
"I don't want my kids to grow up to think drinking is wrong, but I sure as hell don't want them to grow up thinking that getting drunk is expected of them... I am not judging anyone who drinks. Not in the slightest - but why can't having a drink be an option, rather than the expectation?"
Campbell's three-year announcement was celebrated by fans and followers on Twitter and Facebook, with many sharing their own personal stories.
