Tony Abbott has backed the New South Wales government's decision to scrap the controversial Safe Schools program and replace it with a revamped anti-bullying strategy.
The NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes said in a statement the Berejiklian government would roll out the new strategy from mid-year and stop funding Safe Schools.
Abbott took to Twitter to welcome the move.
Stokes said while Safe Schools would be dumped, the NSW Government still supported those who were targeted at school.
"Bullying will never be accepted in NSW public schools - whether it be because someone is overweight, gay, based on the colour of their skin or for any other reason," he said in the statement.
The Safe Schools program has polarised MPs because it includes content on gender fluidity and diverse sexuality.
