Drunk Soldiers Blamed For Manus Island Rampage

More than 100 detainees have signed a complaint related to the incident.

Drunken soldiers are thought to be responsible for the violent rampage that occurred at the Manus Island detention centre on Friday evening.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that the soldiers' actions have been described as "unethical and unacceptable" by Papau New Guinea's provincial police commander David Yapu.

Yapu told the Sydney Morning Herald that the soldiers, who were intoxicated at the time, assaulted refugees and caused a large amount of damage to the compound's infrastructure.

Yapu explains that the soldiers' violent assaults came as reaction to an altercation between a member of the Navy and a group of refugees during a soccer match on the grounds of the facility.

Now, more than 100 detainees have signed a formal complaint that accuses the Australian Border Forces of neglecting to protect those who were injured during Friday night's events.

Refugee Hass Hassaballa has also lodged a complaint accusing the same Navy- member of assaulting himself and others, while playing soccer.

Inspector Yagu has set up a team to investigate the incident.

This is a developing story. More to come.
