CNN reports that a US official confirmed the test, saying that the missile was probably a medium-range ballistic missile called a KN-17.

The missile failed to reach the Sea of Japan, the official told CNN.

Earlier reports suggested that the missile travelled for about 30 to 40 kilometers before crashing into the water off the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea has not yet made comment on the launch.

The event occurred soon after after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urged world leaders to help force North Korea to give up its nuclear ambitions.

More to come.
