Taronga Western Plains Zoo has welcomed a new black Rhino calf to its family, with the youngster already weighing in at a whopping 30 kilograms.

The adorable, and rather heavy, bub was born earlier this month and represents a new hope for the zoo's breeding program for the critically endangered African species.

Staff at the western NSW zoo said they were "super excited" about the new arrival for first time mother Kurafa.

"Mother and calf are doing extremely well, it's a female calf which is great news for our breeding program here," one zoo keeper told Network Nine.

"She has been doing a 100 percent fantastic job making sure her calf stays protected and is quite wary of us being around her proximity at this stage.

"At the moment Kurafa and her calf will remain in a behind-the-scenes area giving them time to bond as much as they can before we bring them out."

The zoo expects the pair to emerge in late June for visitors to come and see.
