CANBERRA -- Well here's a turn-up for the books.

Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who has had quite a few words for the way the Coalition Government has been travelling without his leadership, has praised a major announcement from the Turnbull Government.

Deviating from a long list of opinion pieces, interviews and social media posts that the Turnbull Government was quite often, in his view, heading in the wrong direction, Abbott has tweeted that the end of talks regarding a Western Sydney airport now meant there was now "no obstacle to a speedy build".

The prominent Sydney-based backbencher then said it was "good that we're cracking on with this vital project for jobs and growth in Western Sydney!"
