Two people have been killed in a horror traffic smash after a car and truck collided in regional NSW.

The fatal crash between a sedan and truck happened about 3.30am Saturday on the Newell Highway north of Dubbo, police said.

The truck driver was trapped in his cabin for more than three hours, Channel Nine reports.

The Newell Highway remains closed in both directions, with motorists being urged to use alternate routes.

Officers from the Crash Investigation Unit are examining the location.
