Police have arrested a teenager following a Sydney stabbing.

A man has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed in the head in Sydney's southwest.

The 47-year-old victim sustained the head wounds early Sunday morning at Tantani Avenue in Green Valley, police said in a statement.

The victim was stabbed a number of times after another man tried to steal his car, police said.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the wounded man at the scene, before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not considered life threatening.

A teenage male was subsequently arrested following a foot pursuit, with the help of the dog squad.

The detained teen was taken to Green Valley Police Station where he is being interviewed.
