Unemployed Sydney Man Wins $50 Million In Powerball Lottery

'I don’t even know how many zeros are in $50 million!'

An unemployed western Sydney man was sitting at home with his wife discussing the future for their struggling family on Thursday night when a phone call came that would change everything.

It was NSW Lotteries, telling the man -- who had been unemployed since late last year -- that he was the sole division one winner of the eye-watering $50 million prize.

Should I call my mum? Should I hug my wife? What do I do?"

The man, aged in his 30s, had bought the ticket online. It was the first time that he had done so, so he couldn't quite believe it when NSW Lotteries told him he'd won.

"No! No! No! Don't tell me that! Are you serious, man? I'll probably faint," he told the caller, according to NSW Lotteries.

The call came just minutes after the lottery was drawn on Thursday night, May 11.

"There was only one winner and it's me? Is that what you're saying? Oh my God, I can't believe it," he said.

"I don't know what to do. What should I do now? Should I call my mum? Should I hug my wife? What do I do?"

With his wife crying tears of joy in the background, the man tried to come to grips with the huge windfall.

"It's life changing! I don't even know how many zeros are in $50 million!"

The lottery winner says he wants to open a restaurant to help those in need.

The winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, described the win as a "blessing" and told NSW Lotteries he wants to share his good fortune and help others in need.

"If I'm winning, I want everybody along with me to win," he said.

As well as sharing some of the money with family and friends, he hopes to release his dream of opening a restaurant.

"I want to open a restaurant -- that's my passion -- and give 50 per cent of the food away for free to people who need it. I don't need profits, but there are homeless, students who are struggling, and people in need."

The Sydneysider is the first NSW Powerball lottery winner so far this year.

Next week's Powerball draw will have a $3 million division one prize.
