World Goes Bonkers Over Sergio Garcia's Hole-In-One On World's Most Treacherous Hole

It's the most interesting golfy thing in Florida since that giant 'gator... and that other giant 'gator.

The 17th hole at the TPC Sawgrass golf club in Florida is a hole unlike any other in professional golf. Known simply as "the island green", it's a green which is basically in the middle of a lake. This is where great golfers go to look very, very humble.

But 2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia thumbed his nose at this notorious golfing grave on Friday morning (AEST). Playing alongside Australia's Adam Scott -- who was leading the prestigious Players Championship -- Garcia stepped up and hit a hole-in-one. Just like that.

Which made everyone very excited, not least Twitter, which is live streaming every shot at the hole with a 360 degree camera.

This was Sergio's first competitive round of golf since his Masters win five weeks ago, which just goes to show the recuperative power of rest.

Easy peasy.

As for Adam Scott, well, he stepped up straight after Sergio and dunked the ball in the drink. Oops. He eventually double-bogeyed the hole, and also the 18th, to slip all the way from first to a tie for 19th alongside fellow Aussie Jason Day after his first round.

Sergio's ace was the second in two years on the 17th at The Players Championship, and the eighth overall at that hole in the history of a tournament widely regarded as the toughest in the world outside golf's traditional four "Majors".

Other cool things have happened on the hole over the years, including this incredible and very famous Tiger Woods putt at the 2001 Players, which helped him win the tournament by a single stroke.

Interesting stuff tends to happen on Florida golf courses as a general rule -- some of it more dangerous than others.

Ask most golfers and they'd rather face a giant 'gator than the 17th at TPC Sawgrass. But not Sergio Garcia, or not this week at least.
