Australian woman Sara Connor has had another year added to her sentence over the fatal assault of a Balinese police officer last August, her original four-year sentence being bumped up to five years on appeal.
Connor was sentenced to four years' prison in March for her involvement in the death of 53-year-old Balinese police officer Wayan Sudarsa, an assault carried out by her British boyfriend, David Taylor.
She was found guilty of the charge of group violence causing death. She had been facing eight years' jail, and did not appeal her original sentence, but the prosecution in the case did appeal.
Handing down the appeal verdict on Monday, a Balinese court added an additional year to her sentence. Her boyfriend Taylor had been sentenced to six years, just one year more than Connor's revised term. This is despite Connor's assertion that Taylor had landed the fatal blows on the police officer, and that she had tried to pull the men apart. Her lawyer maintained she "did nothing that directly caused the death of the victim", however judges said that Connor had pinned down the officer during the assault.
