A win and a draw. That's what Australia had overnight courtesy of a surprise Daniel Ricciardo win in the Azerbaijan F1 Grand Prix, and a 1-1 draw by the Socceroos against Chile in the Confederations Cup in Russia.
But you know what? Neither result was expected, so let's call it one-and-a-half wins, in the spirit of taking a glass-half-full attitude.
Or should that be shoe-half-full? Ricciardo is known for his "shoey" celebration where he drinks the traditional celebratory podium champagne from -- ugh -- his own shoe. Because he does. It starts like this...
And then it goes like this...
It's not pretty but it's entertaining, a little like the race was. Amazingly, Ricciardo claimed his fifth career GP victory starting from tenth on the grid. A bad place to start from, yet things soon worsened. He dropped to 17th after some debris got stuck in his brakes and he had to make an unplanned early pit stop.
But chaos ensued up front, one thing led to another, and the 27-year-old Red Bull driver from Perth was able to weave his way through to field to victory.
"Did I think we would win then [from 17th]? I did not. I would have put all my money that this was very unlikely, but yeah, crazy race," the elated Aussie said from the podium.
"I said it yesterday we had to stay out of trouble, and it certainly paid off today. I was kind of just giggling like a little school boy."
He was behaving like a schoolboy on the podium too, some would argue, but then, that's the charm of this likeable fella.
Meanwhile in Moscow, the Socceroos led early courtesy of this rather delicious 42nd minute goal, delicately finished by James Troisi.
Unfortunately Chile struck back in the second half to make it 1-1, which means Australia is now out of the Confederations Cup -- the tournament which pits together the winners of football's regional championships.
The Socceroos got to this event courtesy of winning the 2015 Asian Cup, and while we have not progressed to the semi finals, we've done perhaps a little more than was expected. Certainly we were not embarrassed in losing 3-2 to world champions Germany and drawing with African champs Cameroon and South American champs Chile.
